Jesu, meine Freude BWV 227 van Johann Sebastian Bach: een praedicatio sonora

In the oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach the motets take only a modest position. According to Bach's early biographers he must have written many motets, but only few have been preserved. Among these motets Jesu, meine Freude BWV 227 occupies a special position. It is the only one which combines a complete chorale with a Bible text, the only one which is largely five-voiced (SSATB) and the only one which has a special structure. Bach combined a chorale of Johann Franck, which has a pietistic character, with some verses from the Epistle to the Romans. On further analysis, these two texts appear to have much in common. Their structures correspond with each other, in each the first part deals with life on earth and the conclusion is eschatological in character. Both texts emphasize the central position of Jesus in redeeming the believer. Bach structured the eleven-part composition in such a way that a fugue, the composition style he most valued, is at the centre. The text of this part is a Bible text and by the specific choice of a fugue to be coupled with this text and by placing this fugue at the centre of the composition, Bach as a Lutheran can express his high appreciation of the Bible.
