Drug efflux mechanism by a secondary transporter LmrP of Lactococcus lactis

Microorganisms have developed multiple strategies to resist the cytotoxic effects of antimicrobial compounds. These mechanisms include (i) enzymatic degradation or modification of drug; (ii) alteration of drug target; (iii) prevention of drug entry, and (iv) active extrusion of drugs by transport proteins present in the cell membrane. LmrP is one of such transporters that extrude a wide variety of cationic drugs. It consists of 408 amino acids organized in 12 putative transmembrane segments and belongs to the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS). ...
