Cells are the smallest unit of life that can exist independently. Based on their structure all cells can be grouped into two main categories: cells that contain complex internal membrane structures, called organelles (eukaryote cells) and cells that do not contain these structures (prokaryotes and archaea). Bacteria, like Escherichia coli, belong to the prokaryotes. Their cellular architecture is relatively simple, basically a single compartment containing the hereditary material (DNA) and all the molecules and enzymes that are necessary for function
