(2004) Winter, Christian
It is the aim of this thesis to improve our understanding of the impact of viruses on marine bacterioplankton. In particular, the role of viruses in controlling bacterioplankton species richness and the factors governing virus-induced mortality were investigated in the field, in laboratory experiments, and by mathematical models. The thesis focuses on the North Sea as the principal study area, however, additional work was performed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.
