Photosynthesis is directly or indirectly the most important process for all living organisms. It is carried out by a wide variety of organisms, from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. In all cases photosynthesis is performed by special pigment-containing proteins that are associated to (special) membranes. In higher plants and cyanobacteria the photosynthetic apparatus contains two different types of photosystems: Photosystem I (PSI) and Photosystem II (PSII). In higher plants the photosynthetic membranes are named thylakoid membranes. ...
