(2003) Loots, Geert Erwin
The numerical model for the surrounding structure was discussed in chapter 3. The structure, for example the wall of a blood vessel, is treated as an elastic membrane. The elasticity analogon is directly implemented by describing the wall with a set of surface markers which are connected by elastic springs, resembling the bioiogical structure of blood vessel walls. Properties in axial and radial direction can be defined; topological changes like bifurcations can also be modeled. The reasons for using surface markers were explained; as long as the structure has a physical existence (meaning that it has a certain cohesion and mass, unlike a free surface) this choice is both physically workable and mathematically elegant
