Herring and climate : changes in the distribution of North Sea herring due to climate fluctuations

Natural variation in the distribution and abundance of Norlh Sea herring used to be a well-known phenomenon in the days of the traditional driftnet fishery. With the advent of modern fishing methods after World War II, however, the effects of fishing starled to outweigh the changes in stock size and distribution caused by variations in the environment.
