Solitons and instantons in (spin-)Peierls systems

This thesis deals with quasi-one-dimensional materials with a broken-symmetry state. Tlie linear chain structure of these materials makes their electronic bands highly anisotropic, which leads to an important property of the Fermi surface, called "nesting". Nesting means that different parts of the surface match after translation over some constant wave vector Q.
