In engineering applications the material demands often differ between bulk and surface. As a matter of fact, it is beneficial to select two different materials with the appropriate properties, for the bulk and the surface, respectively. Therefore, substantial effort has been devoted to the surface engineering area of research to apply coatings on a wide variety of substrates. This thesis concentrates on laser surface modification of light weight materials, in particular titanium, in order to enhance its wear and corrosion resistance under conditions of high contact load. ...
