In the process of sound reception, which we call "hearing", the cochlea plays an important role. In this organ (also called inner ear) mechanical vibrations (motion) are transformed into electrical information (nerve signals). Due to the fact that high frequencies transfer their energy to nerve cells in a different area of the cochiea than low frequencies, the cochlea performs a sort of frequency analysis of the incoming sound. ...
