Since the beginning of this century, Dutch nature conservationists have discussed the questions how nature has to be protected and what counts as important nature. As a result, the concept of nature and the related nature conservation practices have changed periodically. At the same time there was a certain consensus about these questions. In this book it it analysed how from about 1880 onwards the concept of nature has been constructed and transformed by the nature conservation movement in the Netherlands. Special attention is paid to the role of biologists and ecologists. ...
