The Introduction reviews human breast anatomy, biochemistry and physiology of human lactation, and human milk composition with emphasis on lipids and fatty acids (chapter 1.1 and 1.2). Present knowledge on perinatal fatty acid transport, parameters of essential fatty acid (EFA) status and the role of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in perinatal growth and development are discussed in the third part of the Introduction (chapter 1.3). The scope of the thesis was to contribute to various nutritional aspects in the perinatal period, with emphasis on human milk compositon, influence of maternal diet and disease on human milk composition, and EFA and myoinositol in the perinatal period. ...
