Abstract thesis Jan Gerritse – Growth of bacteria at low oxygen concentrations
Low oxygen concentrations frequently occur in the environment at the interfaces of oxic and anoxic zones. The experiments in this thesis demonstrate that at low oxygen concentrations anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms can be simultaneously active. Thus, at oxic / anoxic interfaces, the metabolism of aerobic micro-organisms is directly linked to that of anaerobic microorganisms.
This thesis also shows that co-cultures of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria may be applied to achieve complete degradation of poly-halogenated organic compounds. Biological purification filters with habitats for both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria can have several advantages over filters which are solely or sequentially anoxic because:
1.both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria with complementary degradation capacities can simultaneously be active in close cooperation, thus reducing the problem of temporary accumulation of (toxic) intermediates or dead-end products;
2.inactivation or death of either aerobes or anaerobes due to the periodic absence or presence of O2, respectively, is prevented;
3.only a single filter-system is needed, which can be operated continuously under O2-limiting conditions.
