Anaerobic fungi are normal inhabitants of the digestive tract of many herbivores, where they play a role in the digestion of plant material. All strains which have been isolated so far produce H2 as one of the fermentation products and contain
hydrogenosomes, organelles in which the H2-production is presumed to be located. In the general introduction the ecology and physiology of anaerobic fungi and hydrogenosomes of anaerobic eukaryotes are briefly reviewed. ...
