The chemical and physical properties of compounds with a layered structure are strongly determined by the two-dimensional nature of the bonding, viz. strong bonding within the layers and much weaker bonds between the layers; graphite is an example of such and anisotropic solid. the layered transition metaldichalcogenides TX2 like Tis and TaS have structures built of sandwiches TX2 which are coupled by weak van der Waals bonds. ...
