Many properties of finite nuclei are described by effective potentials. The nuclear shell-model provides a good example. It is a very successful description of nuclear structure, based on the idea that the nucleon in a nucleus moves in a single-particle potential arising from its interaction with
all the other nucleons. By comparing shell-model predictions with experimental nuclear spectra, this single-particle potential can be determined phenomeno-logically. ...
