For management of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) to be completely successful, there has to be an effective mode of insulin administration with predictable effects combined with a reliable mode of glucose measurement. In this thesis different aspects of continuous intraperitoneal insulin infusion (CIPII) as an option for intensive insulin therapy in T1DM were investigated. Furthermore, the effectiveness and accuracy of (real time) continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in both patients with T1DM using CIPII and a population undergoing cardiac surgery where studied.
