(2010) Kannekens, Rianne
In sports, talent development programmes have gained popularity in recent decades. To perform well in sport not only physical and psychological skills are of influence, also well-developed tactical skills play a fundamental role. The thesis of Rianne Kannekens focuses exclusively on the importance of tactical skills in talent development in mostly soccer. Tactical skills consist of two main components: declarative knowledge (‘knowing what to do’) and procedural knowledge (‘doing it’) in either attacking and defensive situations. These tactical skills are measured by ways of self-assessment by the players using the Tactical Skill Inventory for Sports. Based on the collective studies presented in this thesis it is concluded that, given that performance levels were positively related to tactical skill levels, promoting tactical skills is essential when it comes to enhancing the performance of elite youth soccer players. The studies to the differences between attackers, defenders and midfielders underscore that for a successful development of a player’s tactical skills task-specific practice and experience is highly important. The procedural knowledge in attacking situations which is associated with positioning and deciding is most determinative for competing at the highest performance level during adolescence. It is also the best predictor for success in terms of future professional careers in adulthood. The conclusions of this thesis give trainers and scouts additional criteria, which they can use to identify and develop talent.
