Although the global initiative on Asthma (GINA) guidelines advocate home monitoring of peak flow in the follow-up of asthma to assess disease severity and to help in making in making the diagnosis of asthma in children, this recommendation is not based on good evidence. The evidence available to date is mainly based on written PEF diaries, which have proven to be unreliable. Because this unreliability does not apply to electronic home spirometry, home spirometers are assumed to be suitable alternative monitoring and diagnostic tool for asthma in children. The main aim of this thesis was to assess the usefulness of home spirometry in monitoring disease severity and in making the diagnosis of childhood asthma.
