The studies described in this thesis show that several polymorphic variations in genes involved in cellular pro-/anti-inflammatory and redox balance have a significant effect on lung function in the general population. Since lung function is a complex trait that is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, some biologically plausible gene by smoking and gene by dietary intake interactions have been investigated for the first time. Ultimately, certain genetic variations described in this thesis are biologically plausible candidates for future studies concerning lung function, smoking-related lung disorders and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in particular.
