In the early seventies of the previous century dental implants were introduced to the dental market to retain mandibular full prostheses. Since then, many studies have been performed to improve the implant design and to optimize the surgical and prosthetic techniques. These studies have resulted in a large increase in implant-based prosthetic concepts. Nowadays, the use of dental implants is no longer restricted to retain mandibular full prostheses, but also to retain maxillary full prostheses, partial dental prostheses, dental crowns (single tooth replacements) and maxillofacial prostheses. Implant-based concepts have evolved into a reliable treatment option and patients' satisfaction is high. In specified circumstances implant-based prostheses are even preferred to conventional prostheses.
Abundant publications on this topic are available. The far majority of the studies, however, focus on implant designs, peri-implant tissues and surgical procedures. In contrast, few well designed studies are available describing the need for surgical and prosthetic care and aftercare underlying implant-based prosthetics. So PhD study was designed to gain insight into the patients' needs for surgical and prosthetic care and aftercare with respect to four major implant-based prosthetic concepts, i.e. implants-retained mandibular and maxillary overdentures, implant-retained dental crowns and implant-retained maxillofacial prostheses. From this study it could be learned that specific prosthetic treatment concepts needed specific care and aftercare. High implant survival, few surgical complications and ma minor need for specific aftercare (restoration of broken parts) were common characteristics. Routine aftercare consisted mainly of peri-implant hygiene care.
