In gastrointestinal surgery anastomotic leakage has a major impact on morbidity and even mortality in patients undergoing surgery. Besides the impact on patients' recovery after surgery and quality of life, health cost are dramatically increased because of repetitive surgical procedures, prolonged ICU and hospital stay and a slower recovery phase after dismissal from the hospital. Futhermore, even the ontological outcome may be influenced negatively. We therefore sought to get more insight in possible causative mechanisms, prediction and interventions in both animal and patient studies.
