As described in chapter 1, preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy and worldwide one of the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. In severe, early-onset preeclampsia, i.e., placental preeclampsia, the syndrome originates from a hypoperfused and hypoxic placenta. One leading hypothesis argues that maternal systemic endothelial dysfunction is caused by circulating factors released from the hyposix placenta.
