The strive for perfection in dental implantology has moved the focus of attention from mere implant survival to predictability and perfection of the hard and soft tissues in the aesthetic area of the dentition. In particular the identification and the understanding of the relevant biological principals influencing the soft tissues around an implant supported crown is considered an important next step in dental implantology. Continuous research is necessary to unveil these principles. It is the wish of our research group that the findings of this study may contribute to the improvement of surgical and clinical treatment protocols. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gain insight in the influence of the augmentation procedure used on the changes in hard and soft peri-implant tissues of implants inserted in reconstructed bone as well on the aesthetic outcome and patient satisfaction of a prosthetic restoration on these implants.
