The impact of parental cancer on children

(2006) Huizinga, Geertje Anke

The purpose of the study is to investigate the psychosocial consequences for children who have a parent with cancer. The study comprises a retrospective (one measurement; eligible families are those with a parent diagnosed with cancer between 1 and 5 years prior to study entrance) and a prospective, longitudinal (eligible families are those with a parent newly diagnosed with cancer) part. For the prospective study assessments will take place shortly after diagosis, and 6 and 12 months later. Multiple informants will be asked to provide information (children aged 11-18 years, the ill and healthy parent, and the teacher). Main aims of the study are: 1. to examine the prevalence of childrens and adolescents internalizing and externalizing, emotional and behavioral problems; 2. to study if the prevalence changes over time; 3. to investigate if childrens or adolescents emotional and behavioral problems vary as a function of illness related variables, parent and/or child sociodemographic characteristics, parental psychological functioning, parent/child personality, family functioning, marital satisfaction, social support; 4. to examine if changes in the above mentioned variables accompany changes in childrens problems.
