Asthma and atopy are prevalent chronic diseases that affect millions of people worldwide, and these prevalence rates are increasing all over the world. Thus, it is important to unravel the pathophysiological determi-nants of their development. Asthma and atopy are caused by an interac-tion of genes and environmental factors. This thesis deals with host factors; that is the genetics of asthma and atopy.
This thesis comprises studies performed by a multidisciplinary collabora-tion between universities in the Netherlands (University of Groningen) and the United States of America (Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem and the University of Maryland at Baltimore) to unravel the complex nature of asthma and atopy.
