Laryngectomy is an ultimate treatment of laryngeal cancer and includes surgical removal of the larynx, including vocal folds. To restore voice, a shunt valve is introduced in the wall between trachea and esophagus to direct exhaling air into the esophagus, where soft tissue structures start to vibrate.
