A new voice for the voiceless : design and in-vitro testing of a voice-producing element

Laryngectomy is an ultimate treatment of laryngeal cancer and includes surgical removal of the larynx, including vocal folds. To restore voice, a shunt valve is introduced in the wall between trachea and esophagus to direct exhaling air into the esophagus, where soft tissue structures start to vibrate. However, substitute voice quality is unpredictable; for females fundamental frequency is too low.
