A common survival strategy for micororganisms on surfaces is the development of a biofilm. Biofilms can be defined as organizations of microorganisms enclosed in a gel-like matrix, which are adherent to surfaces. The biofilm functions to both distribute nutrients to the biofilm cells and to protect the cells from environmental threats.
