Surgical considerations of the aortic coarctation.

(1994) Brouwer, Marinus Hendrikus Josephus

In chapter I, the definition of the aortic coarctation, the natural outcome and the current controversies about its surgical treatment are outlined. Aortic coarctationis a congenitanl arrowing of the upper descending thoracic aorta, which is sufficientiy severe that there is a pressure gradient across the area. The typical anomaly is a shelf-like protrusion which develops most directly opposite the arterial duct and fades away on either side, anteriorly and posteriorly. The result is an eccentric, localized narrowing of the aorta that externally corresponds to a notch in the aortic wall.
