If regular support fails to remedy or reduce the challenging behaviour of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), this can lead to inhumane and/or high-risk situations. A solution in the Nehterlands has been to set up Centres for Consultation and Expertise (CCEs) to offer additional support when regular support has failed. This doctoral thesis looks at the approach (operating procedure) to additional support given to individuals with ID and challenging behaviour. It reports on the effects of such support (consultations offered by CCEs) on reducing challenging behaviour and improving quality of life. It also presents a descriptive and comparative survey research of the approach to additional support available in northwest European countries and regions.
