Jongeren uit landen van het zuidelijk halfrond vertegenwoordigen een groot deel van degenen die lijden, reageren en zich moeten aanpassen aan de verwoestende gevolgen van overstromingen. Hoewel ze kwetsbaar zijn, zijn ze niet een homogene groep van passieve slachtoffers. Het belangrijkste doel van Cecile de Milliano’s onderzoek is na te gaan hoe weerbaarheid tegen overstromingen onder adolescenten mogelijk wordt gemaakt en om te bestuderen in hoeverre deze factoren generiek of context-specifiek zijn. Voor dit exploratief sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek heeft De Milliano de weerbaarheid van adolescenten tegen overstromingen in een mondiale context onderzocht. Indonesië, Burkina Faso en Bolivia zijn gebruikt als instrumentele casussen. Empirische gegevens heeft ze verzameld via adolescentgerichte participatieve activiteiten, interviews, focusgroep-discussies, ongestructureerde observatie en een vragenlijst. De resultaten van de studie tonen een hoge afwisseling tussen de beschermende functie van interne (spirituele, gedrags, cognitieve) en externe (relationele, maatschappelijke, fysiek-natuurlijke, economische) factoren. De afwisseling laat zien dat jongeren weerbaar zijn voor overstromingen dankzij zowel persoonlijke en omgevingseigenschappen. Uit regressieanalyse blijkt dat de relatie tussen context en de weerbaarheid verhogende functie van de factoren niet eenduidig is wat er op wijst dat de vormgevende kracht van context verschilt per weerbaarheidsfactor. De Milliano concludeert dat het belangrijk is om te weten wanneer het zinvol is om overeenkomsten aan te nemen dan wel te weten wanneer de focus moet liggen op verschillen. Haar aanbeveling is om context te integreren in de weerbaarheidsanalyses en interventies. As a possible solution to this problem, we proposed a novel lexical acquisition (LA) technique. This technique enables the automated acquisition of lexical entries for words which are not listed in the lexicon of a given grammar. We started with the description of popular, state-of-the-art implementation paradigms for computational grammars of natural language. Chapter 2 described context-free grammars and two extensions thereof, namely probabilistic context-free grammars and attribute-value grammars. The focus of the discussion was on the latter type since the computational grammars we employed for the experiments presented in our work are attribute-value grammars. We then presented the two grammars which were used throughout this thesis, namely the Alpino grammar of Dutch and the GG grammar of German. We also underscored the importance of the lexicon in those grammars. It is the place where the words covered by the grammar are specified together with their morphological properties and combinatorial potential. Next, Chapter 3 outlined the problem investigated in this dissertation, namely the insufficient lexical coverage of grammars which rely on handcrafted lexicons.
